Area code 315
Area code 315 is a telephone area code in upstate New York. It stretches from the eastern border of Monroe County to Little Falls, north to the Canadian border, east to Massena and south to near Cortland. Most of its population lives in Syracuse and its suburbs. Other major population centers include Utica and Watertown. One of the original area codes created in 1947, it has been split once. In 1954, its southern portion was combined with the eastern portion of area code 716 to form area code 607.
New York State regulators announced that 315 had been projected to become "exhausted" in the third quarter of 2010. The New York State Public Service Commission is weighing two options: an overlay area code, or a split into two codes. Future splits would include a north/south arrangement, splitting Oswego County and the north from 315, or an east/west split, with Oswego and Onondaga forming the boundary. Regulators met to discuss a second code in the 315 region; because of economic conditions, assignable numbers did not run out in the third quarter of 2010 as predicted. The revised projected exhaust date is the first quarter of 2017, at which point the 680 area code will be introduced, creating the first overlay in the upstate region.〔http://www.nanpa.com/reports/NPA_Relief_Activity_Status_Report.pdf〕
